Acupuncture originated in China more than 3,000 yrs ago and involves insertion of needles into various parts of the body with the intention of curing disease. In recent years, it has been proven to be effective in a number of conditions encountered in dental practice such as temperomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome (jaw joint pain) and pain management.
It is also a useful tool to use in patients with a profound gag reflex as it can reduce this considerably and so make dental treatment a lot easier for both the patient and the dentist.
At Peppermint, we are both trained in the use of acupuncture in dentistry. We regard it as an adjunct to conventional treatment and each individual case is assessed before a course of therapy is embarked on. |
